Why does Silhouette Studio need a DXF file?

Silhouette Studio Basic Edition, the free version included with every Cameo and Portrait, cannot import SVG files. SVG import is reserved for the paid Designer Edition. DXF is the format Basic Edition does accept, which is why converting SVG to DXF is the usual workaround. Cricut Design Space reads SVG directly, so Cricut users rarely need this.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

Accepted Answer

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser, on your own computer. Your SVG is never sent to a server, never stored, and never seen by us. You can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it will still work.

Why are my curves angular after converting SVG to DXF?

Accepted Answer

Most converters flatten Bezier curves into a series of straight segments, which looks faceted when you zoom in. This converter fits each curve with true circular arcs using the DXF bulge value instead, so the curve stays smooth and the file stays small. If your software draws the path incorrectly, switch the Curves setting to straight segments.

Why is my text missing from the DXF?

Accepted Answer

A cutting DXF cannot carry live text, only paths. Convert your text to outlines before exporting the SVG. In Illustrator use Type then Create Outlines, and in Inkscape use Path then Object to Path.

Which DXF version does this converter produce?

Accepted Answer

DXF R12, also known as AC1009. It is the oldest and most widely understood DXF dialect, which is exactly why Silhouette Studio and older cutting software read it without trouble.
